Meet at People's Park at 12pm, the race will start at 1pm. It will cost $3. Bring a bag, and a helmet if you have one. The winner will take 80% of the cash, 2nd place will take 15%, and 3rd place will take 5%.

I am so excited about this! We've talked about doing a bike camping trip for a while now. The ride will be relatively short, so being loaded down shouldn't make the trip take too terribly long. I've camped at this site before, and as I recall, it is pretty sizable. So, I hope a ton of people join us. We're shooting for a noontime departure, that way we can set up camp, and get started on the feast. And, I wouldn't mind going for a brief ride further into the forest after setting up camp.

The third week of the Show Up » Hang Out did not disappoint. Nine guys from Indy came down, and evidently they're going to try to make it down every week. Shit yeah!
We sessioned the bunny hop bar for a while, rode up the tree, and played some footdown. Then, half of us went to Greek's and the other half went to play polo. After Greek's we went back to that same bank as last week.
I'll try to come up with a different night spot to go to this week.

Not having my fill of them Indy boys, I drove up there on Friday. We did some chilling, and then hit up this loading dock spot, which had a burly grass bank and a grass spine; and of course, there was Mt. Dew for all (thanks Dylan).

Some good stuff went down both nights.
I really wish I had a video camera there on Friday.

Rinzin and I fashioned an adjustable bunnyhop bar today. It goes up to 20", but I only cleared 14" today on the sidewalk. And, you'd better believe this will be at the Show Up » Hang Out tomorrow. Sounds like Zach and Cody (perhaps more?) are going to be headed down again too. Awesome!

And, Tom got a new Masi, for the miles.

Shawn, Zach, Mark, Cole, Ben, Kody, and Ben all made it down from Indy last night. And, holy crap, it was awesome. After tricking around and some footdown, myself and the Indy folk rode to Greek's for some much needed Mt. Dew and pizza, while the rest of the group went to play polo. We then rode over to the asphalt bank, which we sessioned for a while. I'm not sure if I can thoroughly explain how much fun it was to session that spot, or any spot for that matter, with 7 other people. Needless to say, anyone from Indy is welcome any time down here, for a Hang Out, or otherwise.

Earlier this evening, Rinzin, Ryan, and myself rummaged through some alleys and dumpsters to fashion this bank. Resting on a few pallets, a cinder block, a parking cone, and some sort of air purifier, the surface we procured must have been some sort of drinking game platform, as it was covered with numerous phalli. After a few hops and some bar-spins, I decided to launch out of it, over a grass gap.

Yesterday, Tom, Rinzin, Ryan, and myself found ourselves riding a dam in the woods. I had been to this place before to skate, but it has since been torn up, and resurfaced. The banks are a bit too steep and short in many places, but all-in-all it was pretty legit. We shot some video, but have yet to edit any of it. Here are some photos by Rinzin:

A new force in Bloomington has emerged. And, while I have yet to make a post since its genesis, I have most definitely felt its wrath...

Bringing it with the crazy intense, fixed/single speed only, long as fuck distance races, BRA Bloomington put together rides that pay off...

Their next event is as long as it can be, from the Circle in Indy, to the Square in Bloomington. Look out.

Erica, Nicholas, and myself drove up to Major Taylor Velodrome yesterday for our first laps around the track this season.

Much fun was had.

Fortunately, Jeremy Albert snapped some nice looking photos of the occasion (including the one seen above), cause my camera stayed in my bag the whole time.

I hope to make it up there for this, riding in Indy is always a good time. Not too sure if anyone else can/will go with me...

Last Friday night, I started trying bunnyhop 180's again. I had been trying to take it easy on the potentially fork-flexing tricks ever since I found another Little 5 fork, as I bent 2 Little 5 forks & a cheap mountain bike fork in the span of 40some days earlier this year.
On Friday, I dented my rear deep-v pretty thoroughly.
Today, I cracked my fork.
Fortunately, my good buddy Jesse has been kind enough to lend/sell me a Surly Karate Monkey fork to tide me over until the MKE Bruiser shows up on my porch.

The crack runs the legth of the weld on the underside of the left blade.

Little 500 & Welcome Back Rachel

After riding their bikes up to Indy on Thursday, Richard and Thomas returned Friday with Mark, Shawn, and Charlie, and their bikes. Mike and Adria also made it down from Indy via auto (missed you Bryan). And, on Saturday we all got together and rode out to Bill Armstrong Stadium for the 58th running of the Little 500.

After the race, we rode to Tom's to cook food and drink drinks.
As always, it was great to share company with the Indy folk.

Oh yeah, and WELCOME BACK TO BLOOMINGTON, RACHEL.
DC doesn't know what it's missing.

Major Taylor Velodrome 2009 Season Update

I just got home from work, and checked my e-mail. Much to my delight, Marti from MTV (Major Taylor Velodrome, not the Paramount/Viacom pariah) sent me the 2009 schedule...at least up until May, when it closes for maintenance.

Here's the e-mail:

The Major Taylor Velodrome is gearing up for the 2009 season. Check the calendar on our website* for racing & training dates.

*FYI – if you have the Velodrome page bookmarked, you may have to update it. The shortcut www.indyparks.org/velodrome no longer is working; you must start at www.indyparks.org, then select “Park Listings” and “Sports Complexes” and THEN choose “Major Taylor Velodrome”. Once you get there I’d suggest bookmarking it anew.

Please note: Open Riding will be available Saturday, April 18 through Friday, April 24, then again Monday, April 27 through Thursday, April 30 (12:30-3:30; each 3 hour session is $5 per person.) Weekday hours may vary – please call first.

Also: The track will be CLOSED May 1-15, and perhaps longer, for maintenance. As soon as we’re up and running again, I’ll send another note out via this email list.

I'm considering heading up Sunday the 19th, the day after Part III of the Show Up Classic, so if anyone else is down let me know.

Good work you 4, way to show everyone else how it's done.

Though the rain forced us to postpone the tricks until Part III, I found it invigorating. Apparently so did everyone else, since the top 5 times were within a 1.3 second margin (sorry Sam).
The rain also kept park goers away, which allowed us to post up in a pretty nice shelter. It was complete with several picnic tables, a fireplace, and frequent fragrant wafts of urine (not sure if it was from one of us, or a previous party).

As the points stand, it looks like Mark is well on his way to an overall victory, unless Mike is able to take first in the Alleycat, and prevent Mark from earning any more points.

Thanks to everyone who showed up. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, despite the fact I was actually able to wring out my sopping wet socks by the end.
And big thanks to Erica for getting food and beer for everyone. I think holding the event during the afternoon, and having food and drinks to graze on made it even more of a success.
I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did.

Make sure your calendars are marked for Part III, the Alleycat, on April 18th.
It is the FINAL event of the Show Up Classic. We'll soon post more info on the details of the race itself, but tricks will be held afterward, so we'll try not to make it too terribly hard.

Part II of The Show Up Classic: THIS SATURDAY!!

Part II will most definitely be happening this Saturday, REGARDLESS of weather. Rain has been in the forecast as long as the 28th has been in the 10 day outlook, but fuck it. A bit of rain actually may ward off park goers, which would provide for less congestion, AND assure that we'll have a spot in one of the shelters at the park for the cook out afterward.

I know that there are some folks may have trouble making it down right on time, but don't worry. Other than tricks, nothing really needs to happen all at once, and we'll wait if we know you're running late. So, we'll save the tricks for the end, and can run people through the sprints and hill climb anytime Saturday, really.

We're hyped, hope you are too.

The SHOW UP CLASSIC: Part II

Part II of the Show Up Classic is right around the corner. The cost will be $5 for part II, or $8 for parts II and III. If you've already registered for all 3 events, bring your spoke card, we've got your names.

The Sprints will be about 1/10 to 1/5 of a mile. We'll run heats of 3-4 riders until everyone has ridden 1 heat. The fastest 4 riders after heat 1 will all race a longer 2nd heat. First rider to cross the line of heat 2 wins top points.

For the Hill Climb, riders will start from a standstill, and have a certain amount of time to ride as high as they can. The rider who gets the furthest up the hill wins top points.

For the Trick Off, riders will have 1 minute to do their thing, winners will be judged by crowd reaction, Tom, and myself. Points assigned accordingly.

After the event, we're going to be cooking out at the park. So, bring whatever food/beverages you care to enjoy.

You can park in the parking lot outlined, but we may be riding around the park before it gets started.

Meet and register at 3pm, Sprints begin at 4pm.

Friday the 13th Bike Fright - The Aftermath

As expected, Sam and Bryan did a great job with this one.
Between the push ups, tire carrying, crab walking, (fake) blood-splatting in the face, red bull chugging, balloon blowing, heel-clicks, 2 liter carrying, and numerous miles of unfamiliar red lights, Richard and I somehow managed to finish.

Now I'm even more hyped for part II, and have some ideas brewing for part III, the Alleycat.

Congrats to MASI Mark for another good showing!

I must say I'm more than happy to be headed back to Indy, and it sounds like Sam and Bryan have cooked up quite a race. Splendid.

As for Part II of the Show Up Classic, we've added a hill climb. We'll get it added to the points breakdown, and post it.
At this point, we're thinking of meeting at 3pm starting at 4pm.

We rolled up to Indy on Friday for one of the most enjoyable weekends of my adult life.

The critical mass was great, though cold. The open sprints were damned exciting, I nearly screamed my voice away (not sure of the cost, but it's definitely something I would like to try to bring to Bloomington). And after all that, we headed across the street for some duckpin bowling, $3.25 High Life bottles, and onion rings by the pound (also something Bloomington could benefit from...the duckpin bowling that is).

On Saturday, we made it over to the handmade show. Though it was a bit overwhelming, it did not disappoint. Naturally, I came away with a serious case of gawk-jaw.

Big thanks to Burd for getting the hook up on the Macaframa premier, which was wild. It's just too bad we only watched it once. I could have just hung out and watched it on repeat all night.
Tricking around at Pan Am was also a blast, still cold though.

REALLY BIG thanks to Shawn, Mike, James, and Chris for letting everyone invade their place for all the goings on. And, to Big Car Gallery for hosting ArtBike and the premier.

Well folks, after a few months without an event, we bring you the first installment of the three event SHOW UP CLASSIC. The first event will be in a parking garage. Part of this event will be a pairs relay, so either pick a partner before, or be prepared to be paired up on the spot. It's the day before Valentine's Day, so no excuses now, SHOW UP.

As far as the SHOW UP CLASSIC goes, there will be points awarded to winners of this first event at the parking garage, which will be added to the points awarded in the 2 subsequent races.

**THERE WILL BE MODEST PRIZES AWARDED AFTER EACH EVENT**
